Congratulations on purchasing your new saddle from Penfolds.
Listed below are a few guidelines which we hope you will find helpful.
We recommend that all new saddles are treated on the flesh (underside) of the leather with a good quality saddle oil (such as Neatsfoot) to keep the leather supple and avoid colour loss. On some makes of saddle we recommend this treatment on both sides of the leather. Once this has been absorbed we recommend treating with a saddle soap or hide food. Some of the saddle companies that we use supply a sample pot of their preferred product with the new saddle when purchased.
Your saddle has been fitted to the shape of your horse today and a template of the horse’s wither has been taken for reference.
We recommend that all new saddles are checked after about 6 to 8 weeks (if used daily) as by this time the flocking will have settled to the shape of the horse and will need topping up again. We do not make a charge for the stuffing on this occasion with a new saddle, but we do charge for the visit and subsequent visits (price according to area).
Horses are likely to change shape due to age, changes in diet, fitness levels, all these will affect the fit of your saddle. The onus is on you as the owner, to be aware of this and look out for any signs such as soreness, rubbing, or excessive movement of the saddle, please call us out in good time to rectify any problems.
As a rule we would suggest the saddle is checked every 6 months, although in some cases such as with a remedial saddle fitting or a very young or unfit horse this would need to be done more often.
Current saddle fitting charges are:
• Fitting of a new saddle-NIL
• Fitting of a second hand saddle-standard visit charge

• Visit -Pro-rata by area (this can be shared by several customers at the same yard to a minimum fee of £10 each)
